Kiribati eyes on more lands overseas

AUCKAND – Tuesday, 29 January 2013 – Kiribati is keeping an eye on more lands overseas to invest them for its future generation.
Kiribati’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Reteta Rimon, revealed this to a Kiribati church community newsletter in Auckland Te Euangkeriosaying the government is opened to any suggestions from its people living overseas regarding any development proposals.
The land in Savusavu, Vanua Levu was owned by the Anglican Church of Fiji. It cost Kiribati $FJ9millions, and the High Commissioner says the first part of payment had been paid to the church.
Reteta says the Kiribati government has signed a land purchase agreement with landowners in Fiji. She’s encouraging the Kiribati migrants to inform the government’s overseas representatives or the Office of the President in Tarawa of any lands for sale.
Deputy President of Kiribati National Council in New Zealand, Teaiaki Koae, says a number of their people arrived every year in New Zealand under the Pacific Access Category and it’s hard for them to find job offers.
“This is an ideal way to provide job opportunities for our people who are migrating to New Zealand if the government is interested in purchasing a land in New Zealand,” Teaiaki says.
The High Commissioner was on a short holiday in New Zealand, and during her stay she’d met with a number of Kiribati workers on daily farms in Auckland and Tepuke.
