Resource: Yap State News Brief/ May 7, 2012
The National Women’s Health Week will be celebrated with many health activities that will involve all women from 18 years and older in Yap, according the Department of Health Services and the Wa’ab Community Health Center (WCHC).
During National Women’s Health Week, employees of the Department of Health Services and WCHC will be giving “FREE HEALTH SCREENINGS”, which will include Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) or Pap Smear tests (for cervical cancer), Clinical Breast Examination (for breast cancer), Oral Cavity Check (for oral or mouth cancer), Random Blood Sugar Testing (for diabetes), Hemoglobin Test (for blood count) and Blood Pressure, STI testing, TB/Leprosy screening, Flu shot & Filariasis Testing, among others.
Unlike previous National Women’s Health Week where health screenings were conducted at the Yap Memorial Hospital, due to renovation work currently underway at the hospital, this year’s screenings will only be done at the WCHC sites on-island—namely Gagil, Tomil, Maap/Rumung, and Nimgil.
Women in Yap have been urged to just walk in and ask for their free check-up without making appointments at the WCHC sites, starting Monday, May 13 to Friday May 17, 2013.
For Nimgil CHC, screening starts from 9:00AM – 2:00PM everyday during the Health Week. Maap/Rumung CHC and Tomil CHC will open from 9:00AM – 5:00PM. Gagil CHC will be open seven days from Sunday, May 12 from 2:00-5:00PM, and Monday to Saturday from 9:00AM – 3:00PM.
In a statement by Health Services, “It is important for all women 18 years old and older to take part in the screening because healthy women are happy women and this is the week that “MOTHER’S DAY” falls on. And to show you they care, you are all invited to have your free screening as a gift to yourself”.
In addition, all women who get one or more NCD (non-communicable disease) screenings will be entered into raffles for a chance to win one of many shopping vouchers ranging from $25 to $50 for the NCD screenings, and $100 to $300 for the oral, breast and cervical cancer screenings. There are more than $1,000 worth of shopping vouchers to be offered at this year’s special event, only at the CHC sites.
